About This Tool
Find the elapsed duration between two local clock times without doing hour-and-minute subtraction manually. The calculator is useful for shifts, study sessions, travel legs, equipment runtime, events, and other same-day or overnight intervals that do not require timezone conversion.
How To Use It
- Enter the starting clock time.
- Enter the ending clock time.
- Review the duration as hours and minutes, total minutes, and decimal hours.
- If the end time is earlier than the start time, read the result as an interval that crosses midnight into the next day.
Examples
Work session
9:15 AM to 5:45 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.5 decimal hours before subtracting any breaks.
Crossing midnight
10:00 PM to 2:00 AM is treated as a 4-hour duration ending the next day.
Convert to total minutes
A duration of 2 hours 15 minutes is also shown as 135 total minutes, which can be easier to use in billing or scheduling calculations.
Useful Notes
Local clock time only
This calculator compares clock times without attaching them to a date or timezone. It does not perform timezone or daylight-saving conversions.
Overnight assumption
When the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the end occurs on the following day rather than returning a negative duration.
Decimal hours
Decimal hours convert minutes into a fraction of an hour. For example, 30 minutes is 0.5 hour and 15 minutes is 0.25 hour.
Breaks are not removed automatically
The result is the full elapsed span between the entered times. Subtract unpaid breaks or pauses separately when calculating worked time.
FAQ
Can the duration cross midnight?
Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, it is treated as occurring on the next day.
Does this handle timezones?
No. Use the Time Zone Converter when the start and end values are in different timezones.
Are lunch or rest breaks deducted?
No. The calculator measures the full elapsed interval, so breaks need to be subtracted separately.
What are decimal hours used for?
Decimal hours are convenient for timesheets, billing, spreadsheets, and calculations that expect one numeric hour value instead of hours and minutes.
