About This Tool
Use the business days calculator to add workdays from today or any starting date, or to count working days in a date range. Saturday and Sunday are excluded by default, but you can choose any nonworking weekdays for a regional or custom schedule. The tool can also exclude observed US federal holidays automatically and skip extra holidays or blackout dates.
How To Use It
- Choose whether to add business days from a starting date or count business days between two dates.
- For an added-date result, enter the starting date or choose Use today, then enter the number of business days and whether to add or subtract them.
- Turn on the range option when you need both ends of an estimate such as 3–5 business days from a starting date.
- For a between-dates count, enter the start and end dates and choose whether each endpoint should be included.
- Keep Saturday and Sunday selected for a standard workweek, or choose the nonworking weekdays that match your schedule.
- Choose whether to exclude observed US federal holidays, and enter any additional holidays as YYYY-MM-DD dates.
- Review the resulting workday date or the adjusted business-day count, including holiday and weekend handling.
- For added-date results, compare the business-day offset with the calendar-day span to see how many dates the selected weekends and holidays skipped.
- Check the policy you are following before using the result for official deadlines, payroll, or contractual timing.
Examples
Five business days from today
Select add business days, choose Use today as starting date, enter 5, and the result skips weekends plus observed US federal holidays before showing the due date.
Ten working days from a date
Enter the starting date, add 10 business days, and keep observed US federal holidays enabled when those closures should not count as workdays.
Project planning window

Holiday handling
Business days are calculated as Monday through Friday. For dates from 2021 onward, the US federal holiday option uses the modern 11-holiday schedule and observed closure dates, such as a Friday or Monday observance when a fixed-date holiday falls on a weekend. For earlier dates, turn off the preset and enter the historically applicable holidays as custom dates. Duplicate entries count once, and weekend holidays do not reduce the weekday total.
Adding business days
When adding or subtracting business days, the starting date is the anchor and the next counted day is the first eligible weekday after or before it. For example, adding one business day to a Friday returns the following Monday unless a holiday is entered. Offsets are limited to 10,000 business days per calculation to keep browser processing responsive. Results must remain between years 0000 and 9999. An offset of zero returns the starting date unchanged.
Endpoint options
Endpoint options apply to the between-dates count. Including the start date is useful when work begins that day. Excluding it is useful when counting days after a request is received.
Standard weekday calendar
Saturday and Sunday are selected as nonworking by default. You can select a different weekly pattern, such as Friday and Saturday, or model a six-day workweek. The calculator does not model half-days; use custom holidays for full company shutdown dates.
Calendar dates only
Counts are based on calendar dates rather than times of day. Time zones, daylight-saving changes, office hours, and cutoff times are outside this calculation.
Business days versus calendar days
A business-day offset does not convert to one fixed number of calendar days. The displayed calendar span measures the actual date-to-date distance for your starting date and exclusions, while skipped calendar dates show the weekend and holiday dates crossed on the way to a single result.
Deadline rules vary
Legal, support, delivery, school, and workplace rules can differ on whether endpoints count and what happens when a due date lands on a weekend or holiday. Use the output as arithmetic support, then apply the governing rule.
FAQ
What date is 5 business days from today?
Choose Add or subtract business days, select Use today as starting date, enter 5, and use Add business days. The result skips Saturdays, Sundays, observed US federal holidays when enabled, and any custom weekday holidays you enter.
Does adding one business day to Friday return Monday?
Yes, unless Monday is an excluded holiday. The calculator skips Saturday and Sunday, then counts the next eligible weekday.
Are public holidays excluded?
For 2021 onward, the preset excludes the modern observed US federal holiday schedule. Holiday laws changed over time, so earlier dates require the preset to be turned off and the historically applicable dates entered manually. Add state, local, company, or other holidays as YYYY-MM-DD dates separated by commas or new lines.
Are weekends counted in the business-day total?
No. Saturdays and Sundays are reported separately from the Monday through Friday business-day count.
What happens if I enter the dates backward?
The calculator counts the absolute range between the two dates and notes that the dates were entered in reverse order.
Do duplicate holidays count twice?
No. The same holiday date is counted once, and only if it falls on an included weekday within the selected range.
Can I use a non-Monday-to-Friday workweek?
Yes. Select the weekdays your schedule treats as nonworking. Saturday and Sunday are the defaults, but you can use Friday and Saturday, one nonworking day, or another weekly pattern as long as at least one day remains a working day.
How many calendar days is five business days?
There is no single answer because the span depends on the starting weekday and any holidays. Enter the start date and five business days; the result shows both the due date and the actual number of calendar days crossed under the selected schedule.
