Choose the right tool

Identify both the source unit and the destination unit before entering a value. Converting changes how a quantity is expressed; it does not change the quantity itself. Some conversions use a scale factor, temperature needs an offset, and fuel economy can use a reciprocal relationship. Select the conversion that matches the measurement rather than copying a factor from an unrelated unit pair.

  • Length Converter: Translate linear measurements such as inches, feet, centimetres, and metres.
  • Area Converter: Convert surface measurements; square units need their own conversion factors.
  • Temperature Converter: Compare Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin with the correct scale and offset.
  • Data Size Converter: Distinguish decimal storage units from binary units and bits from bytes.

Worked example: measure a rectangular panel

  1. A panel measuring 12 inches by 24 inches has sides of 30.48 cm and 60.96 cm because one inch is exactly 2.54 cm.
  2. Multiply the original sides to get 288 square inches. Convert that area to 1,858.0608 square centimetres, or multiply the two converted lengths to check the same result.
  3. Round only the final answer to the precision your measurement supports. A tape-measure reading does not justify every decimal produced by an exact conversion factor.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • For area, square the length factor; for volume, cube it. Multiplying square inches by 2.54 alone is incorrect.
  • A US gallon and an imperial gallon differ. MB and MiB also differ. Verify the full unit name when comparing labels, specifications, or prices.
