Choose the right tool
Text cleanup should preserve meaning while changing presentation. Decide whether order, capitalization, whitespace, or repeated lines carry information before applying a transformation. A mailing list may need duplicates removed, whereas repeated lines in a transcript can be intentional. Keep the source and compare the result before replacing a document or publishing edited text.

Worked example: prepare a heading and identifier
- Start with the phrase user profile image. A case conversion can produce User Profile Image for a heading and userProfileImage for a code identifier.
- Choose the variant required by the destination. A visible heading and a JavaScript property serve different purposes even when they describe the same thing.
- For a heading containing a brand or acronym, restore the intended capitalization manually. Compare the finished text with the original so punctuation and meaningful wording remain correct.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Word counts differ between editors because punctuation, hyphens, and language boundaries can be treated differently. Check the destination's own counter for a strict submission limit.
- Sorting text is not the same as sorting numbers. Review lists containing numeric prefixes, mixed case, or accented characters, and avoid sorting paragraphs whose sequence carries meaning.
