Running Pace Calculator
Find running pace per km or mile from distance and time.
About This Tool
Turn a completed run's distance and elapsed time into an average pace you can compare across routes and distance units. Enter kilometers or miles and your total time to see pace per kilometer, pace per mile, and equivalent average speed in km/h and mph. The calculation is purely mathematical and works for running, jogging, walking, or any steady distance-and-time activity.
How To Use It
- Enter the total distance you covered and choose kilometers or miles.
- Enter the complete elapsed time using hours, minutes, and seconds. Minutes and seconds each run from 0 to 59.
- Read your average pace in minutes per kilometer and minutes per mile.
- Use the average-speed results when you need the same performance expressed in km/h or mph.
Examples
5 km in 25 minutes
A 5 km run completed in 25:00 has an average pace of 5:00 min/km, about 8:03 min/mile, and an average speed of 12 km/h.
10 km in 1:02:30
A 10 km run completed in 1 hour, 2 minutes, 30 seconds averages 6:15 min/km. Including seconds is useful when comparing close performances.
3.1 miles in 24 minutes
A 3.1-mile run in 24:00 averages about 7:45 min/mile. The calculator also converts that performance to a per-kilometer pace automatically.
Useful Notes
How running pace is calculated
Average pace equals total elapsed time divided by distance. For example, 25 minutes divided by 5 kilometers is 5 minutes per kilometer. This tool converts the entered distance using exactly 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers before calculating both unit systems.
Pace and speed describe the same average differently
Pace tells you how much time is needed for one kilometer or mile, so a smaller pace is faster. Speed tells you how much distance is covered per hour, so a larger speed is faster. The two outputs are equivalent descriptions of the same distance and elapsed time.
Average pace is not instantaneous pace
The result averages the entire entered distance and time. It does not show changes caused by hills, stops, intervals, GPS drift, or faster and slower sections within the activity.
Elapsed time versus moving time
Use whichever time matches the comparison you want to make. Elapsed time includes stops, while a watch or fitness app may report moving time separately. Mixing the two can make otherwise similar runs appear to have different average paces.
FAQ
Is a lower running pace better?
For pace expressed as min/km or min/mile, a lower number means less time is needed to cover each unit of distance and therefore represents a faster average pace.
Can I use this for walking?
Yes. The calculation only needs distance and elapsed time, so it can also describe walking, hiking, or similar activities where average pace is useful.
Why does the mile pace differ from the kilometer pace?
A mile is longer than a kilometer, so the time needed to cover one mile is greater at the same speed. The converter uses the international mile of exactly 1.609344 kilometers.
Does this predict my race finish time?
No. It reports the average pace and speed of the distance and time you enter. Maintaining the same pace over a different distance depends on fitness, course, conditions, fatigue, and other factors.
