About This Tool
Estimate how much fuel a trip may use and what that fuel may cost. Enter trip distance in kilometers, your vehicle's fuel efficiency in km/L, L/100 km, or US mpg, and the current price per liter. The calculator normalizes the efficiency value to estimate liters consumed, then multiplies that quantity by the entered fuel price. It is useful for route budgeting and comparing vehicle-efficiency scenarios without requiring an account, location, or live fuel-price service.
How To Use It
- Enter the planned or completed trip distance in kilometers.
- Enter your vehicle's representative fuel efficiency and select the matching unit: km/L, L/100 km, or miles per US gallon.
- Enter the fuel price per liter in your preferred currency.
- Review estimated liters used, total fuel cost, and fuel cost per kilometer.
- For a round trip, enter the full round-trip distance rather than only the one-way distance.
Examples
300 km at 15 km/L
A 300 km trip at 15 km/L uses 20 liters. At a price of 100 per liter, estimated fuel cost is 2,000 and fuel cost per kilometer is about 6.67.
250 km at 8 L/100 km
Consumption of 8 L/100 km over 250 km requires 20 liters. Multiply those 20 liters by the local price per liter to estimate trip fuel cost.
100 miles equivalent at 30 US mpg
A distance of 160.9344 km is 100 miles. At 30 miles per US gallon, the trip uses about 3.33 US gallons, or about 12.62 liters.
Compare efficiency scenarios
Keeping distance and price unchanged while increasing km/L reduces estimated liters and cost. With L/100 km, the direction is reversed: a lower number represents better fuel efficiency.
Useful Notes
Fuel calculation with km/L
For kilometers per liter, estimated liters used = distance in kilometers ÷ km/L. A vehicle averaging 15 km/L over 300 km therefore uses 20 liters under the model.
Fuel calculation with L/100 km
For liters per 100 kilometers, estimated liters used = distance × L/100 km ÷ 100. Unlike km/L, a smaller L/100 km value represents better efficiency.
US mpg conversion
For miles per US gallon, the calculator converts kilometers to miles using 1 mile = 1.609344 km, divides miles by mpg to obtain US gallons, then converts gallons to liters using 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 liters.
Cost calculation and currency
Total fuel cost = estimated liters × fuel price per liter. The calculator is currency-neutral: the output uses the same implicit currency as your price input. It does not fetch live prices or perform currency conversion.
Why actual fuel use can differ
Published or historical efficiency is an average, not a guarantee for a specific trip. Traffic, idling, speed, gradients, weather, payload, tire pressure, driving behavior, detours, and vehicle condition can all change real consumption.
FAQ
How do I calculate fuel cost for a round trip?
Use the total distance for both directions. If the return route is the same distance, double the one-way distance before calculating.
Does the calculator use live petrol or gas prices?
No. Enter the price per liter yourself, which keeps the calculation current for your location without sending location data or depending on a fuel-price API.
Is US mpg the same as Imperial mpg?
No. This tool's mpg option uses the US gallon. Imperial gallons are larger, so an Imperial-mpg value should not be entered as US mpg without conversion.
Why is lower L/100 km better but higher km/L better?
L/100 km measures fuel consumed for a fixed distance, so less is better. km/L measures distance traveled per liter, so more is better.
Does this include tolls, parking, maintenance, or other trip costs?
No. The result covers only estimated fuel consumption and the fuel price you enter. Other travel and vehicle costs are outside this calculation.
