About This Tool
BMI is a quick adult height-to-weight screening calculation that compares body weight with height using a standard formula. This calculator is useful for general reference, classroom examples, wellness tracking notes, or checking the category used in many public-health charts. It is not a medical diagnosis, a body-fat measurement, or a complete measure of health, and it should be interpreted with age, sex, pregnancy status, muscle mass, medical history, and professional guidance when health decisions matter.
How To Use It
- Choose metric units for kilograms and centimeters or US units for pounds and inches.
- Enter a positive weight and height. Use current measured values when accuracy matters rather than rounded guesses.
- Review the BMI value, the standard adult screening category, and the formula used for the selected unit system.
- Use the result as a screening reference only, not as a diagnosis or a replacement for clinical context.
Examples
Metric BMI
A weight of 70 kg and height of 175 cm gives a BMI of about 22.9, which falls in the standard adult healthy-weight category.
US BMI
A weight of 154 lb and height of 69 in gives a BMI of about 22.7 using the 703 x lb / in² formula.
Screening interpretation
Two adults can have the same BMI but different body composition, training background, health history, or risk profile, so the category is only a starting point.
Useful Notes
BMI categories
Common adult screening categories are under 18.5 for underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 for healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 for overweight, and 30 or higher for the obesity range. The calculator reports these broad categories exactly as screening labels, not as individual health conclusions.
Who the result is for
The standard BMI category cutoffs are intended for adults. Children and teens are usually assessed with age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles, and pregnancy or postpartum situations require different clinical context.
Use with context
BMI does not account for muscle mass, athletic build, body composition, fluid shifts, waist measurement, medications, disability, ethnicity-related risk differences, or clinical history. A clinician may combine BMI with other measurements and symptoms when health decisions matter.
Privacy
The height and weight calculation runs in your browser. Hanakash does not need to upload these values to a server for the calculator to work, but avoid entering sensitive health information on any shared or untrusted device.
FAQ
Is BMI a diagnosis?
No. BMI is a screening measure. It can flag a broad height-to-weight category, but diagnosis and health advice require broader clinical context.
Which units can I use?
You can use kilograms and centimeters in metric mode or pounds and inches in US mode. The calculator converts the selected inputs into the appropriate BMI formula.
Can athletes or muscular adults have a high BMI?
Yes. BMI uses only height and weight, so it can classify some muscular adults as overweight even when body-fat percentage or overall health context tells a different story.
Should children use this calculator?
This calculator uses adult BMI categories. Children and teens are usually interpreted with age- and sex-specific BMI percentile charts instead.
