This is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed investment outcome. It assumes a constant annual return compounded monthly and equal deposits at the end of each month; taxes, fees, inflation, volatility, and changing rates are excluded.
About This Tool
Work backward from a savings target to estimate the equal monthly deposits needed to reach it. The calculator includes the future growth of money already saved and models new deposits at the end of each month, making it useful for planning a cash reserve, large purchase, education fund, or other defined goal without implying a guaranteed investment result.
How To Use It
- Enter the amount you want to have at the end of the plan.
- Enter money already set aside for the goal.
- Enter an estimated annual return; use 0% when you do not want to assume growth.
- Enter the number of years available and review the estimated monthly contribution.
Examples
Goal with no assumed growth
A 12,000 goal starting from zero over one year at 0% requires 1,000 per month.
Existing savings plus growth
For a 50,000 target with 10,000 already saved, a five-year horizon and a 6% assumed annual return, the required monthly deposit is lower because both the starting balance and later deposits are modeled with monthly compounding.
Current balance already sufficient
If the current balance is expected to grow to or beyond the target by the goal date, the estimated required monthly contribution is zero.
Useful Notes
How the monthly amount is calculated
The current balance is grown using a monthly rate derived from the entered annual return. The remaining future amount is then solved using the future-value formula for equal end-of-month deposits. At a 0% rate, the remaining amount is simply divided by the number of months.
Contribution timing
Deposits are assumed to happen at the end of each month. A beginning-of-month schedule would have slightly more time to grow and could require a somewhat smaller deposit.
Return is an assumption, not a promise
The entered return is held constant only to create a planning estimate. Real savings and investment returns can change, and market-based returns can be negative.
What is excluded
The estimate does not model taxes, account fees, inflation, withdrawals, irregular deposits, changing rates, or investment volatility. Consider those separately when they materially affect your plan.
Use 0% for a simple contribution plan
Entering a 0% return removes assumed growth and shows the monthly amount needed from contributions alone after accounting for current savings.
FAQ
Does this guarantee I will reach the goal?
No. It is a mathematical planning estimate based on the amounts, time, and constant return you enter. Actual results can differ.
When are monthly deposits assumed to happen?
At the end of each month. This is the ordinary-annuity convention used by the calculation.
Can I enter a 0% return?
Yes. At 0%, the calculator divides the amount still needed by the available months without assuming investment growth.
What if my current savings can already reach the target?
The required monthly contribution is shown as zero when the modeled future value of your current balance reaches or exceeds the target.
Does it include inflation or taxes?
No. The target and return should be chosen with your own assumptions in mind; inflation, taxes, fees, and changing returns are not modeled.
