About This Tool

Examples
Average power
Doing 600 J of work in 3 s gives P = 600 ÷ 3 = 200 W.
Work from power
A constant average power of 2 kW sustained for 30 s corresponds to W = Pt = 60 kJ of transferred energy.
Find elapsed time
Transferring 72 kJ at an average rate of 600 W takes t = 72,000 ÷ 600 = 120 s, or 2 minutes.
Zero work
If zero net work is transferred over a non-zero time interval, the average mechanical power for that work is 0 W.

Power, work, and time
Average mechanical power is P = W/t. Rearranging gives W = Pt and t = W/P. One watt equals one joule per second.
Average versus instantaneous power
This tool calculates average power across the entered interval. Instantaneous power can change from moment to moment and generally requires information about how work or energy transfer varies with time.

Mechanical context

This calculator does not model efficiency losses, electrical voltage/current relationships, varying instantaneous power, rotational torque, or the detailed forces that produced the work. Use the quantities appropriate to the physical system.

What is mechanical power?
Mechanical power is the rate at which mechanical work is done or mechanical energy is transferred. Average power is total work divided by elapsed time.
What is one watt?
One watt is one joule of energy transferred per second, so 1 W = 1 J/s.
Is a watt-hour a unit of power?
No. A watt-hour is a unit of energy. Power measured in watts multiplied by time measured in hours gives energy in watt-hours.
Why can average power differ from instantaneous power?
Average power uses total work divided by the whole time interval. The actual rate of doing work may be higher or lower at individual moments within that interval.
