About This Tool
Use this final grade calculator when a course combines completed assignments, tests, projects, or categories with a remaining final exam. It totals the weighted points you have already earned, normalizes your current grade over completed work, and solves the final-exam score needed to reach a chosen overall target. You can also enter an expected final score to preview the resulting course grade.

Examples
Need 40% on the final
If completed work has already earned 72 weighted course points, the final is worth 20%, and the target overall grade is 80%, the required final score is (80 − 72) ÷ 0.20 = 40%.
Target is not reachable without extra credit
If you have 60 weighted points before a 20% final and want an 85% overall grade, the required final score is 125%. The calculator reports this directly instead of capping the result at 100%.
Target already secured
If you already have 90 weighted points and only 10% remains, an 85% target would require −50% on the final mathematically. In practice, a 0% final is already enough for that target under the simple model.
Current grade versus course points
Scores of 80% on a 30%-weight item and 90% on a 20%-weight item earn 42 course points. Across the completed 50% of the course, the normalized current grade is 84%.
Useful Notes
Weighted grade formula
Each completed item contributes score × weight ÷ 100 to the final course percentage. Adding those contributions gives current weighted course points. The current grade on completed work is those points divided by the completed weight, then multiplied by 100.
Required final exam score
If P is the weighted course points already earned, W is the final exam weight as a decimal, and T is the target overall percentage, the required final score is (T − P) ÷ W. A result above 100% indicates the target is not reachable under ordinary 0–100 scoring unless the course offers extra credit or another adjustment.
Why required scores can be negative
A negative mathematical requirement means the points already earned are sufficient to remain at or above the target even if the final score is 0%. The calculator explains this rather than treating the negative value as an input error.
Weights must total 100%
This calculator models a course where the entered completed work plus the final exam account for the entire grade. Requiring a 100% total prevents an incomplete weighting scheme from silently producing a misleading target score.
Check course-specific policies
Real grading systems may drop low scores, normalize categories internally, award extra credit, apply curves, round at specific stages, or require a minimum exam score. Those policies can change the result and are not inferred by this calculator.
FAQ
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Add the weighted course points you have already earned, subtract that total from your target overall grade, then divide by the final exam weight expressed as a decimal. This calculator performs those steps from your entered grades and weights.
Why is my required final grade over 100%?
It means the target cannot be reached with a normal maximum score of 100% on the final under the weights you entered. Extra credit, a curve, or other syllabus rules could change that, but the calculator does not assume them.
What does current grade mean here?
Current grade is your weighted average over the work that has been completed. It is different from weighted course points, which are the percentage points that completed work already contributes to the final course grade.
Can I use category grades instead of every assignment?
Yes, if your syllabus gives fixed category weights and the category percentages you enter are already calculated correctly. Enter each completed category as one row with its course weight.
Does the calculator handle extra credit or dropped grades?
Not automatically. Adjust the scores or category averages according to your instructor's rules first, or use the official gradebook when those policies are complex.
