About This Tool
Density describes how much mass is contained in a given volume. This calculator solves the relationship density = mass ÷ volume in all three directions: enter mass and volume to find density, density and volume to find mass, or mass and density to find volume. It also converts common metric and imperial units so values such as grams and milliliters can be used directly without manually converting everything to SI units first. Examples
Water-like density
A mass of 1000 g occupying 1000 mL has density 1 g/mL, which is also 1000 kg/m³.
Find mass from density and volume
A material with density 2.7 g/cm³ and volume 100 cm³ has mass 270 g because mass = density × volume.
Find volume from mass and density
A 2 kg object with density 1000 kg/m³ occupies 0.002 m³, equivalent to 2 L.
Convert density units
A density of 1000 kg/m³ is approximately 62.428 lb/ft³. The calculator performs this conversion as part of the same calculation.
Useful Notes
Density formula
Density is represented by the Greek letter rho (ρ) and is calculated as ρ = m / V, where m is mass and V is volume. Rearranging gives m = ρV for mass and V = m / ρ for volume.
Common density units
The SI unit is kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³). Grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm³) and grams per millilitre (g/mL) are numerically equivalent because 1 mL equals 1 cm³. Also, 1 g/cm³ equals 1000 kg/m³.
Mass and volume conversions

Density depends on conditions

Precision and significant figures
A calculated result should normally reflect the precision of the measurements used. Extra decimal places from a calculator are mathematical precision, not evidence that the original mass, volume, or density measurement was equally precise.
FAQ
How do I calculate density?
Divide mass by volume, making sure the units are compatible. For example, 50 g divided by 25 cm³ gives 2 g/cm³.
Are g/mL and g/cm³ the same?
Yes numerically. One millilitre is exactly one cubic centimetre, so a density expressed in g/mL has the same numerical value in g/cm³.
Can density be zero or negative?
For ordinary material-density calculations, mass, volume, and density are positive quantities. This general-purpose calculator therefore rejects zero and negative inputs.
Does the calculator identify a material from its density?
No. Different materials can have similar densities, and density varies with conditions. Identifying a substance requires appropriate measurements and context beyond this calculation.
